Free One-on-One College Application Workshops Offered this Fall

When Josiah Johnson, a senior at Bakersfield High, sat down to start his college applications, he didn’t expect to feel overwhelmed so quickly. Between juggling homework and extracurriculars, Johnson found himself drowning in deadlines and decisions.

“It feels like everything is happening at once,” he said. “I want to get into a good school, but the pressure is just a lot.”

Johnson’s experience is far from unique. Every fall, high school seniors across Kern County and beyond dive into the college application process, which can be both exciting and daunting. While full of potential, this milestone often becomes a significant source of stress for students and their parents.

“There’s so much more to consider than simply choosing your favorite institution,” said Kierstin Webb, director of College & Career Programs at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools (KCSOS). 

The process requires understanding varying admission requirements, preparing robust applications — which often include writing essays, getting letters of recommendation, and collecting transcripts and evidence of extracurricular activities — considering a major, being aware of available financial aid, and more. Application fees and deadlines compound the pressure.

For this reason, the Kern Regional K-16 Education Collaborative is offering free college application workshops on three dates this fall — October 26, November 16, and November 23. Workshops will be held in three locations: Bakersfield’s Bell Tower, Mojave’s East Kern Community School, and Shafter’s Veterans Hall. Virtual meeting options are also available.

Workshop services include:

• General college counseling
• Help with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and scholarships
• Writing assistance for personal essays
• Advice on choosing majors and navigating the California Dream Act and AB 540 residence requirements

Webb says the program can be especially beneficial to undocumented students, first-generation college students, or anyone needing extra guidance.

“These workshops are about making the college application process seamless and ensuring students and families feel supported,” Webb added. “We encourage anyone feeling stressed by the process to take advantage.”

With personalized support and a range of services, students like Johnson and countless others can find the guidance they need to tackle the college application process confidently. Parents, too, can benefit from expert advice on financial aid and scholarships, easing some of the financial concerns that often accompany the process.
