CALM’s Cats Pick Eagles to Win the Super Bowl, While Bears Snooze the Season Away

With their usual star predictor fast asleep, the California Living Museum (CALM) turned to its feline residents to make this year’s Super Bowl pick. For years, CALM’s beloved black bear, Cinnamon — affectionately known as Cid — thrilled football fans with his impressive 85 percent accuracy in predicting the championship game’s winner. But this year, Cid and his fellow bear Louie opted for a long winter nap. As the pair snored away, their feline friends decided to take matters into their own paws.

Sage, one of CALM’s resident mountain lions.

Laurel, Misty, and Sage — the zoo’s majestic mountain lions — along with their bobcat counterparts Roxy, Rufus, and Coco, were given the honor of making the Big Game pick this year. The cats could choose between boxes stuffed with their favorite treats — one decorated with the Eagles and the other, the Chiefs. The rules are simple. The box of goodies in each habitat the cats engaged with first represent their pick. In the end, both groups of cats chose the Eagles.

“This is our pilot year allowing the bears to fully embrace their winter dormancy,” said CALM Curator Sharon Adams. “It’s incredibly important for their health and well-being. Visitors may not see them out and about, but don’t worry — they’re doing exactly what nature intended: sleeping through all the excitement.”

Unlike true hibernation, torpor is a state of reduced activity where bears wake occasionally before drifting back into deep rest. Depending on the bear, this lazy winter routine can last for days, weeks, or months.

Meanwhile, the Cats of California showed no signs of napping on the job. They pounced, shredded, and confidently made their pick — perhaps reveling in their new status as CALM’s official sports analysts.

With the prediction now locked in, all eyes are on game day to see if the cats can live up to Cid’s legendary 85 percent success rate. One thing is for sure — whether snoozing or not, CALM’s animals are making sure the Big Game tradition lives on.
