Sierra Sands Unified Celebrates Milestones in School Culture, Student Support
Monday May 12, 2025
The Sierra Sands Unified School District (SSUSD) in Ridgecrest is celebrating a series of noteworthy achievements that reflect the district’s deep commitment to student well-being, inclusive learning environments, and strong community partnerships.

Las Flores Elementary School was recently recognized as a California Purple Star School for its exceptional efforts in supporting military-connected students and their families.
“Las Flores Elementary exemplifies the best of our district’s values — support, empathy, and innovation,” said Superintendent Dr. April Moore. “This recognition is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of the faculty, staff, and community in ensuring that military-connected students feel valued and supported every step of the way.”
Principal Tate shared similar thoughts, expressing pride in the Purple Star School designation and emphasizing that it reflects the school’s ongoing dedication to creating a caring, supportive space where all students — especially those from military families — can grow and succeed.
Las Flores Elementary was also honored — along with Inyokern Elementary School — as a 2024–2025 Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School®. The award celebrates schools that create emotionally safe, connected, and high-achieving campuses using the Capturing Kids’ Hearts framework.
“The recognition reflects the dedication of our educators and staff in fostering a culture of kindness, respect, and academic excellence,” said Dr. Moore. “Their commitment to prioritizing student relationships has created an environment where students feel safe, supported, and inspired to achieve their full potential. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and thrilled to celebrate this outstanding achievement.”
Meanwhile, at Pierce Elementary School, staff and families came together to launch the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program recently, which invites positive male role models into the school to foster student engagement and school safety.
“The Watch D.O.G.S. program is a wonderful opportunity to deepen connections within our school community and create a supportive environment where students can thrive,” said Principal Dulce Baca. “We’re thrilled to see this initiative come to life at Pierce Elementary.”
Baca praised Mr. Gamboa, a Pierce parent who played a pivotal role in bringing the program to the school, expressing heartfelt appreciation for his vision, dedication, and tireless efforts. She described his leadership as truly inspiring and said his impact will leave a lasting legacy on students, staff, and families alike.

The district also recently received a significant financial boost to advance its Community Schools initiative. SSUSD was awarded a $1.9 million grant from the California Community Schools Partnership Program to enhance integrated support systems at Pierce Academy of the Arts and Mesquite High School over the next five years.
“We are thrilled to receive this funding, which will allow us to strengthen our commitment to engaging with our families in supporting student success,” said Kristen Simpson, SSUSD’s Community Schools coordinator. “Community Schools create a collaborative learning environment where students, families, educators, and community members work together to ensure that every child has the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.”
The grant will fund expanded student support services, strengthen family and community partnerships, introduce innovative learning aligned with SSUSD’s Portrait of a Graduate, and provide professional development for educators.
