Valley Oaks Charter Named Tehachapi’s Best School, Teacher Honored
Friday September 26, 2025
Valley Oaks Charter School (VOCS) in Tehachapi has been voted the community’s Best School by the readers of the Tehachapi News, a recognition that Principal Kristi Henry says reflects the strong partnership between families, credentialed teachers, and students.
“We are honored and humbled that our community has voted Valley Oaks Charter School the best in town,” Henry said . “What sets us apart is our 3-pronged approach — home educator, credentialed teacher, and student. When that formula is working at a high level, there is nothing that cannot be accomplished.”

Serving nearly 320 TK–12 students, VOCS offers families an independent study model combined with the benefits of a school site, including enrichment classes, extracurricular activities, and school-wide events. Henry credited her teaching staff as “highly trained, passionate, and innovative,” which she said allows for continuous growth and academic success among students.
Adding to the celebration, VOCS high school science teacher Mrs. Thornburg was named one of Tehachapi’s Favorite Teachers. She teaches a wide range of subjects including biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, computer science, and anatomy/physiology, while also advising the school’s Interact Club.
“Mrs. Thornburg not only has a passion for science, but she continually goes above and beyond to mentor, coach, support, and lead our students,” Henry said. “We are deeply appreciative of her dedication to Valley Oaks and truly believe we’ve won the lottery with her.”
Henry said both recognitions underscore the dedication of Valley Oaks’ families and staff, and she expressed deep gratitude to the Tehachapi community for its continued support.
