A Spooktacular Tradition Returns to CALM Zoo

Friday October 3, 2025

For two decades, families across Kern County have marked their calendars for one of the most beloved fall traditions in Bakersfield — Boo at the Zoo. This year, the CALM Zoo is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Halloween-themed event, welcoming guests October 15–19 for five days of festive fun, animal encounters, and community spirit.

From the moment visitors step through the gates, CALM Zoo is transformed into a whimsical autumn wonderland. Bright orange pumpkins line the pathways, friendly ghosts and cobwebs adorn the trees, and the sound of laughter fills the air as children in costumes explore the grounds. Unlike a typical trick-or-treat event, Boo at the Zoo blends classic Halloween charm with the zoo’s unique animal experiences, creating an atmosphere that’s both playful and educational.

Throughout the day, families can enjoy carnival-style games with prizes, hop aboard the Central California Children’s Railroad for unlimited rides, or simply wander the zoo’s trails to see animals receive their own Halloween surprises — like Jack-o’-lanterns stuffed with tasty treats. For many young visitors, these up-close animal moments are what make Boo at the Zoo truly unforgettable.

On October 15 and 16, CALM will host Toddler Days, a special experience designed for children ages three to five. The grounds come alive with age-appropriate games and activities, offering younger guests a chance to celebrate Halloween in a safe, welcoming environment. Of course, children of all ages are invited to join the fun on these days too.

Boo at the Zoo has always been powered by community generosity. CALM is currently accepting donations of candy and small toys to use as game prizes. To protect the animals, donations can’t include chocolate, nuts, or gum. Items may be dropped off at the CALM gift shop or ordered through the Amazon wish list at bit.ly/24BATZWishlist.

With its blend of Halloween festivity, family activities, and up-close animal encounters, Boo at the Zoo offers a one-of-a-kind way to celebrate the season. Whether you’re a longtime attendee or a first-time visitor, CALM’s annual tradition promises memories that will last well beyond October. Boo at the Zoo runs October 15–19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are available online at calmzoo.org, at the CALM Zoo gift shop, or at the gate on event days.
