CSUB Alumni Association to Induct Dr. John Mendiburu into Hall of Fame

Friday October 3, 2025

What started as a routine Zoom meeting quickly turned into a moment Dr. John Mendiburu won’t soon forget. Expecting to discuss business related to an ongoing partnership with CSUB, the Kern County Superintendent of Schools was surprised to find a screen full of familiar faces — including CSUB President Dr. Vernon Harper — who was ready to deliver some unexpected news: Mendiburu had been selected as one of California State University, Bakersfield’s 2026 Alumni Hall of Fame inductees.

Dr. John Mendiburu poses with Hazel, the family’s new golden retriever puppy, who’s quickly become the heart of their empty-nest household.

“We are so proud of you as a ‘Runner,’” Dr. Harper told Mendiburu during the virtual announcement. “You are such an amazing leader in this community and have been for many, many years. The impact of your leadership can be felt all over Kern County.”

In true humble fashion, Mendiburu’s first reaction was disbelief.

“Wow are you sure you have the right John?” he joked, prompting laughter from those on the call.

“That’s right on brand, John,” Dr. Harper replied with a smile.

Mendiburu thanked the group, crediting the team effort behind Kern County’s education success.

“Everyone you see on this screen makes things happen,” he said. “It’s not about me — I’m just a pathway to help them do what they need to do for the students of Kern County.”

The CSUB Alumni Hall of Fame honors graduates who have made a lasting difference in their professions and communities. Mendiburu earned his B.A. in Liberal Studies from CSUB in 1995, followed by his Administrative Credential and Master’s in educational administration. He joins four other distinguished honorees in this year’s class, which will be honored at the 20th anniversary Alumni Hall of Fame dinner will be held on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026 at the Marriott downtown. This event will kick off Homecoming Weekend at CSUB.

With more than 30 years of experience in Kern County’s education system, Mendiburu has dedicated his career to supporting students, educators, and families. He began his journey in the Rosedale Union School District (RUESD) — where he was once a student — first as a classroom teacher and later as principal of Almondale Elementary School.

He went on to serve as assistant superintendent of business services before being named district superintendent in 2009. During his tenure, he oversaw significant projects, including campus modernizations, a new gymnasium at Rosedale Middle School, and district office renovations.

In 2019, Mendiburu was recruited by then–Kern County Superintendent of Schools Mary Barlow — herself a CSUB Alumni Hall of Fame inductee — to join the county office as associate superintendent. He was appointed County Superintendent in 2022 following Barlow’s retirement.

Since taking on the role, Mendiburu has spearheaded major expansions at KCSOS, including the purchase of the historic Bell Tower Plaza — set to become the organization’s signature educational training center when it opens this winter — the creation of the Kern Future Readiness Center, the launch of the Kern County STEAM Yard, and the expansion of the county Network for Children’s Dream Center.

“When John came over from Rosedale, he lit up KCSOS with a lot of energy and brought a lot of new ideas and partnerships,” said Dr. Mary Barlow.

Mendiburu is also a dedicated community leader. He has served on the boards of the California Living Museum, the Kern Economic Development Corporation, and the California County Superintendents Association, and is an active member of the Rotary Club of Bakersfield.

His connection to his alma mater remains equally strong. Mendiburu has served on CSUB’s President’s Community Ambassador Council, brought back the KCSOS Office Welcome at the university’s Icardo Center, and partnered with CSUB to host the Kern Healthcare Academy, which offers high school students hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to medical careers.

“CSUB shaped my personal and professional journey,” Mendiburu said. “The partnership we share is phenomenal, and being recognized by the university that gave me my foundation is truly an honor.”

Outside of work, life has entered a new chapter for the Mendiburu family. With both children now away at college pursuing their studies and competing in water polo, he and his wife Shelby recently joined the ranks of empty-nesters. To help ease the transition, they welcomed Hazel, a golden retriever puppy whose boundless energy has quickly brought new life and joy into their home.

“It’s a big change, but Hazel’s helped us find a new rhythm,” Mendiburu said with a smile.
