HolidayLights Hosts Preview Night, Opens to Public Saturday

Tuesday November 25, 2025

The California Living Museum (CALM) welcomed sponsors, community partners, and members of the media on Monday night for an exclusive first look at the 23rd annual HolidayLights at CALM Zoo. Presented by Adventist Health, the preview was highlighted by the unveiling new displays, expanded features, and special additions ahead of Saturday’s public opening.

A visit with Santa is always a crowd favorite during HolidayLights.

Last night’s preview offered guests an early opportunity to explore this year’s festive light displays, themed areas, returning favorites, and new attractions created by designer Josh Barnett and his Lightasmic! team. CALM Director Meg Maitland welcomed attendees and shared enthusiasm for the beloved Kern County tradition.

“This event is all about bringing people together,” Maitland said. “For 23 years, HolidayLights has created memories for families across Kern County. We’re thrilled to share this sneak peek with our partners — and we can’t wait to welcome the community this weekend.”

New This Year: ‘Stock the Shelves’ Holiday Food Drive

In partnership with KCSOS’s Nutrition Education program and the KCSOS Food & Nutrition Services Department, CALM Zoo will launch a special “Stock the Shelves” Holiday Food Drive throughout the HolidayLights season. From Nov. 29 to Jan. 3, guests are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to help support students and families experiencing food insecurity.

For every three items donated, guests will receive one raffle ticket for a chance to win a private spring dinner at The Willows at CALM for up to 12 guests. There is no limit to the number of raffle entries. The winning ticket holder will be notified on Jan. 7, 2026. Accepted items include canned fruits and vegetables, soups and sauces, pasta, peanut butter, rice, beans, and other shelf-stable foods. All donations will benefit KCSOS Nutrition Education students and families across Kern County.

Expanded Features and Returning Favorites

In addition to the food drive, this year’s event features several exciting additions:

  • Special themed nights after Christmas, celebrating fan-favorite stories such as Harry Potter, Wicked, Star Wars, Frozen, and more.
  • A new Veterans Memorial, honoring Kern County service members.
  • Christmas tree sales at The Pines Tree Farm and Market.
  • Expanded food stations in partnership with Teen Challenge, with proceeds supporting local programming.
  • Returning favorites including the Candy Cane Express, Santa’s North Pole, and the Creation Station craft area.

Russell Bigler, chair of the CALM Foundation, emphasized the community impact of HolidayLights.

“Each ticket purchased directly supports CALM’s mission and our long-standing partnership with Kern County Teen Challenge. HolidayLights truly brings joy to our entire community,” he said.

HolidayLights remains CALM’s largest annual fundraiser, with all proceeds reinvested into the zoo’s programs and facilities. The event continues to earn national recognition, including being named one of the top zoo light shows in the country by USA TODAY and among the top holiday light displays in the western U.S. by the Los Angeles Times.
