Nearly 800 high school band, choir and orchestra members filled the stage at the Mechanics Bank Theater and Convention Center at the “It’s a Grand Night for Music” celebration Tuesday night.
Student performers from all over Kern County auditioned for a spot on stage. Kern County Superintendent Dr. John Mendiburu and Mayor Karen Goh introduced the performances. The orchestra, choir and band each performed a selection of pieces.
Grand Night dates back to 1948 as a music festival to spotlight elementary school orchestras. Over the years, choirs were introduced and the festival evolved to a high school honor showcase. Middle and elementary school students will show off their musical skills at the Kern County Honor Music Festival March 5 at the Mechanics Bank Theater.
