Wasco Union Celebrates Students’ Journey to English Proficiency
Tuesday November 5, 2024
The Wasco Union Elementary School District held its annual English Language Reclassification Ceremony last week, celebrating the achievements of 127 students in grades K-8 who have successfully transitioned from English Language Learner (ELL) status to reclassified as fluent English proficient students. The event underscores the district’s commitment to fostering academic success and supporting English language development among its diverse student population.
The ceremony was held at Thomas Jefferson Gymnasium, where parents, educators, and community members gathered to honor the students’ hard work and dedication. This year, the district added a unique twist to the ceremony by incorporating the vibrant traditions of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Parents and students were greeted with music from the Mariachi Melodia De Mexico. Participants could taste delicious traditional foods and sweets that honor the holiday. Student artwork decorated the gymnasium, including pumpkins painted with the cultural focus.
Each student received a certificate to honor their reclassification, a milestone marking both their hard work and dedication.
The event featured inspiring speeches from district officials, including district Superintendent Brad Maberry, who highlighted the significance of this milestone in each student’s educational journey.
“Mastering more than one language allows us to engage deeply with diverse cultures and perspectives, fostering empathy and understanding among individuals from different backgrounds,” Maberry said. “This skill is not just about communication, but about building connections that bridge divides and strengthen our communities.”
During the ceremony, Assistant Superintendent Danny Arellano took on the role of Master of Ceremonies, guiding the event with energy and warmth as each student was recognized individually for their achievements. Each one received a certificate to honor their reclassification, a milestone marking both their hard work and dedication. As the ceremony drew to a close, the pride and joy in the room were unmistakable. This reclassification of 127 students not only celebrates a major academic accomplishment but also opens up new doors of opportunity for their futures.
