Kern County Students Shine at State Academic Decathlon

The 2025 California Academic Decathlon State Competition was held in a combination of formats this year: two online events and one in-person event. Across all competitions, local high school students from Stockdale, Arvin, and Frontier High Schools brought home an impressive collection of medals.

During the in-person portion of the competition — which took place March 20–23 in Santa Clara featured ten events, including Essay, Speech, Interview, and the popular Super Quiz — students from Frontier High School, coached by Samantha Pulido, earned an impressive medal count:

  • Abbet Monte De Ramos
    • Bronze in Art, Literature, Music, and Science
    • Also received a 7,000-point recognition pin
  • Olivia Ussery:
    • Silver in Economics and Interview
    • Gold in Science and Social Science
    • Earned Bronze overall in the Varsity Category
  • Rachelle Mansour:
    • Silver in Essay
  • Sebastian Garcia:
    • Bronze in Math

In the online Heptathlon event help on March 8, students competed individually in seven subject tests plus an essay. Stockdale High School, led by Coach Gaby Scully, had a strong showing:

  • Lucie Khuu
    • Bronze in Math
  • Yui (Benji/Milan) Manibo
    • Bronze in Social Science
  • Brooklyn Weston
    • Silver in Art
    • Bronze in Economics
    • Silver in Literature
    • Silver in Music
    • Silver in Social Science

In addition to subject medals, two students were recognized among the top scorers in the state overall:

  • Yui Manibo
    • Bronze in the Honor Category
  • Brooklyn Weston
    • Gold in the Varsity Category

The online Octathlon, a team-based competition featuring the same seven subjects and an essay, was also held on March 8. Under the leadership of Coach Matthew Regpala, Arvin High School earned several medals:

    • Bronze in Economics
    • Bronze in Math
  • Andrea Corral:
    • Bronze in Economics
    • Bronze in Literature
