Camp KEEP is the recipient of a Whale Tail Grant from the California Coastal Commission. Funding will be used to enhance the student experience at the KEEP Ocean and KEEP By the Sea campuses beginning in the fall.

Students with visual impairments at San Lauren Elementary and Beardsley Elementary welcomed in special class pets today thanks to The Assistance League of Bakersfield. The dog plushies — Shadow and Beacon — have their names stitched in braille on the inside of the ear so that the students can read their names.

At Redwood High School, located in the Kern County Crossroads Juvenile Facility, students are learning to garden using hydroponics. Now they’re taking those skills and helping other communities, including the WC Walker Senior Center (@cityofshafter).

This morning, children of all ages gathered at Beale Memorial Library (@kerncountylibrary) for the launch of the KCSOS Summer Meals Program. In addition to providing a free BBQ lunch to children and their families, Beale Library also hosted the Dairy Council of California’s Mobile Dairy Classroom. This engaging presentation offered a unique, hands-on learning experience about dairy farming and nutrition.

This kick-off event is part of a larger effort by KCSOS to provide free meals to students during summer vacation.

Open to children ages 2-18 at several locations throughout Kern County, these meals are funded by the California Department of Education’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). They provide an opportunity to continue a child’s physical and social development while ensuring access to nutritious meals during vacation periods from school, ultimately helping children return to school ready to learn.
