Four Foothill High School students spent their summer far from Bakersfield — immersing themselves in new languages, cultures, and perspectives through international study abroad programs with the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). For more than 75 years, CIEE has provided high school and college students, as well as educators and working professionals, with opportunities to study, work, and live abroad. With programs in more than 30 countries, CIEE’s mission is to help people build language skills and bridge cultural divides to create a more globally connected world.

This summer, a group of young foster students from across Kern County experienced more than just hands-on learning — they began making their mark as future civic leaders. For three weeks this summer, the Kern County Superintendent of Schools (KCSOS) hosted its third annual Foster Youth STEAM Summer Camp at the Kern County Museum. The free program welcomed 23 incoming third through sixth graders currently active in the foster care system.

Kern County middle and junior high school students gave rousing speeches in the 70th annual Henry Greve Speech Contest Thursday evening. The competing students had between four-and-a-half and seven minutes to persuade the judges with their speech on the topic: “The Influences of Media on Today’s Youth.”

Valley Oaks Charter School senior Max Morelos has spent much of his life soaring through the air as a competitive gymnast. This spring, Max will graduate from VOCS’s independent study program, and join the prestigious men’s gymnastics team at the University of Oklahoma (OU), a program renowned for its 12 national championships and consistent placement among the nation’s top teams.
